Raising Minimum Wages: What’s It Really Worth? Words like â€Å"unemployment† and â€Å"poverty† have seemingly crept into every American’s conversations, are televised on news channels as frequently as commercials, and are printed in every local newspaper and major magazine. Although most Americans are not faced with unemployment or poverty, those who are suffer great hardship through rising costs and a stagnant economy. Some admirably suggest that raising minimum wages across the nation would damper the effects of poverty on our most vulnerable and impoverished citizens. However, raising minimum wages has far greater implications than what is widely known and has the potential of leading to increased poverty and unemployment. Joseph J. Sabia, professor of the Department of Public Administration Policy, American University, states, â€Å"minimum wages fail to reduce poverty because many poor Americans do not work.† (593). Minimum wage laws were cr eated to protect poor Americans and subsequently federal and state governments would increase minimum wages periodically to counter inflation rates. The problem that emerged from this is employers’ demands for labor decreased as minimum wages increased. As a result, Americans already unemployed who sought work can no longer compete for a position that has now closed. The I Ever Received 8 Mile By Eminem - 2534 Words

The power that a few words thrown together is amazing; the meanings we can conclude from them are so powerful. I remember the first rap music CD I ever received: 8 Mile by Eminem. The album was released in 2002. I was in 2nd grade but I would listen to it with my brother and his friends, who were a solid eight to ten years older than I was. That Christmas my brothers’ best friend gave me my very own copy of the album, but made me promise to not let mom and dad know where I got it from. I listened to that CD on repeat constantly; on the bus to school, in school, on the way home, I would even listen to it once I was back at home. A relatively new form of presentation of poetry called Spoken Word has emerged and ta ken over the media. Spoken word is defined has a form of poetry intended for an on stage performance yet initially written on paper (Nelson-Atkins.com).The difference between a rap song and a spoken word poem is presentation. A rap song is more of a story and a spoken word presentation can be more of a lesson. Basically a rap song is a sonnet and spoken word is free verse. Since the difference is so slight, why do people view rap music and spoken word so whole heartedly different? Should we view the message of poem or song differently based on the presentation? After a lot of thought and research rap is essentially poetry. (In the Heart of the Beat 25). A rap song doesn’t just give someone a catchy melody to sing along with on the drive home, it has the possibility to be relational. America has an occupational safety and health Act 1970 which is supplemented by the National Institute for Occupational health and safety. Furthermore, governments in most countries have become committed to occupational safety and health aspects thus making it a policy issue. Occupational, health and safety issues are based in the Ministry of Labor, Department of Occupational Health and Safety. Studies conducted in the past, for instance, Hughes (2007) surveyed 2000 employees pertaining to various organizations and industries in multiple levels. The reported results of these surveys showed that nine out of ten affects the attitude of employees and increases their productivity (Nowier, 2009). Employees feel motivated and 'valued by their employers when their needs are comprehensively taken care of. The motivation and employee satisfaction are a major contribution to employee productivity hence improved organizational performance since there is a reduction in cost associated with injuries, absenteeism, accidents and court cases due to failure to comply with occupational health and safety regulations. Previous research studies have shown that about 4.7 million non-fatal injuries and illnesses occur at work annually (Mathis and Jackson, 2006). Injuries are prone in every occupations and matters of safety are treated differently by both the employer and employees. The building surveyor provides services that are sensitive to safety and health of employees and thus the challenge it faces is based on providing a safe and health work environment in order to motivate staff and hence improve their performance. Safety training and safety policy are also essential determinants to enhance safety performance. Effective training assists employees to have a sense of belonging and thus, is more accountable for safety in their workplace. Literature review This aimed to highlights the theoretical review of occupational safety and health standards, the role that organizations play in enhancing workplace safety and health and the various strategies developed by several authors. Previous studies have demonstrated that effective safety management improves level of safety in organizations. Thus, it can be seen to decrease damages and harm from incidents (Bottani, Monica Vignali, 2009). Commitment to safety management, communication safety, health and safety objectives, training needs, rewarding performance and worker involvement are some common themes of safety management practices noted by Mearns et al. 2003. They also maintained the associations between safety management, safety climate, and safety culture. Overall safety culture is considered to be indicated by safety climates, while safety management practices display safety culture of top management. The result is a good safety management practices are reflected in enhanced safety climate of all employees. Commitment of management determines the level of the positive and supportive safety attitudes portrayed by the employers to the employees. From a prior study, Yule: Bin and Murdy (2007), claimed there has been a reduction in accidents from the dedication to the safety management. The study conducted in the construction industry in 2001 by the Occupational Safety and Health Council of Hong Kong found out that the attitude of senior management towards safety culture was positive. The level of positive response fell from the senior managers, supervisors to the front line workers. The study based on the fact that the construction industry is the most hazardous industries in Hong Kong, proposed that its safety culture be strong. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) OSHA is a federal law from the Occupational Safety and Health Act established in 1970.It was designed to make the workplace safer by ensuring that the work environment is free from hazards. It was created within the Department of labor, and it is mostly concerned with administering the act and to set and enforce the safety and health standards that apply to most workers in the United States. OSHA Act mandates numerous safety standards and enforces these standards through a system of inspections, citations, and fines. OSHA requires that employers should provide a safe and healthy work environment. This calls for the compliance with specific occupational safety and health standards and keep records of occupational injuries and health. Occupational diseases were being reported every year. To ensure that each employer complies by the health and safety standards, OSHA imposed three major obligations on employers: To provide a safe and healthy work environment, complying with specific occu pational safety and health standards and keeping records of occupational injuries and illnesses. Canwell (2004), state that in most large organizations, all health and safety issues are mainly coordinated by a particular officer, who is concerned with the maintenance of a safe working environment and safe working practices. Employers should thus provide an employment place that is free from recognized hazards that are likely to cause death or serious physical harm. It is a requirement by law that businesses should ensure that their employees' health is not compromised as the result of their work (Sutherland and Canwell, 2004). All the employees should be made aware of the existence of the safety and health policy by issuing a safety policy document to all employees or through a company handbook that has details of the policy. Mathis and Jackson (2007) came up with three approaches to be used in managing safety and health. The first approach is organizational approach consisting of designing jobs, developing and implementing safety policies, using safety committees and coordinating accident investigations. The second is the engineering approach: Designing work settings and equipment, reviewing equipment and applying ergonomic principles. The third approach is the individual involves reinforcing safety motivation and attitudes, providing employee safety training and rewarding safety through incentive programs. Conclusions Economic arguments aimed at promoting business efficiency through effective management. Legal argument showed the responsibilities of both the employee and the employer. Moral and ethical argument portrayed the importance of having the safety an employee protected. The costs of accidents and illness can be immense, but the good news is that there is evidence that the regulations, penalties and increased awareness brought about by OSHA have improved workplace safety and health significantly. The major role that organization should to play is in enhancing a workplace health and safety environment. The management and employees should actively participate in enhancing a conducive working environment through effective implementation of OSH regulations to enhance employee productivity. Organizations should train their staff on health and safety issues, regularly inspect the workplace and provide a health policy for guidance. Capitalizing on this news, Othello's ensign, Iago, who had earlier professed his desires to Desdemona without receiving her love in return, sought revenge. Also passed over for promotion as Othello's new lieutenant chief of staff, the Moor having chosen instead a loyal Florentine, Michael Cassio, Iago now devised a scheme to rid himself of these sorry reminders of his own failings. He dispatched his inexperienced follower, Roderigo, to inform Brabantio of the illicit marriage. The thought of a beguiling Moor's marrying his beloved daughter without consent, led the Senator with his guards to Othello's house. However, violence was postponed by the report of an imminent attack on Cyprus from armed Turkish galleys. The Duke of Venice summoned Othello to the senate chambers. When Desdemona appeared and professed her love for Othello, the Duke cleared him of wrongdoing, saying to Brabantio, "If virtue no delighted beauty lack, / Your son-in-law is far more fair than black." Then the Duke directed his courageous commander to lead the Venetian forces to Cyprus in its defense. With his honor intact, and through Desdemona's pleas to remain with her love, Othello gained permission to have her sail with him. For the voyage, Othello entrusted Desdemona to the care of Iago's wife, Emilia, who did not suspect her husband's treachery. Before the soldier band could reach its enemy, a storm destroyed the Turkish fleet and dispersed the Venetian vessels. Fortunately, all of Othello's ships returned safely to Cyprus and Othello and his bride were reunited. Iago's hateful plan turned now to lies and innuendo. Seeing the infatuation his pawn Roderigo had for Desdemona, Iago engaged Rodcrigo in conversation, promising that he could secure for him Desdemona's love: I hate the Moor. My cause is hearted: thine both no less reason. Let s be conjunctive in our revenge against him. If thou canst cuckold him, thou dost thyself a pleasure, me a sport. But then evil Iago demanded a price for Desdemona: Roderigo would have to engage Cassio in a fight during the lieutenant's night watch. Iago further fanned Roderigo's readiness to kill Cassio by claiming that Cassio was Desdcmona's latest love. That night Iago succeeded in getting Cassio drunk, and the brawl turned to riot. By way of reprimand, Othello was forced to demotc Cassio, a severe blow to the high-ranking officer. Desdemona nobly appealed to her husband on Cassio's behalf, in an attempt to revive their friendship. This innocent act provided Iago with yet another idea - a way to convince the Moor of his wife's "natural attraction" to the handsome young Florentine. Iago approached the despondent Cassio and convinced him that a meeting could be arranged between him and Dcsdcmona; and she could use her influence to have Cassio's position restored. When the meeting took place, Iago drew Othello aside to cause him to see Cassio in the act of "soliciting" his wife. He also began his line of subtle allusions to gossip of a prior romance between the two. His clever suggestions continued, daily planting seeds of jealousy in Othello's heart. Meanwhile, Desdemona could sense her husband's growing despair. Othello's jealous rages grieved not only her, his ill-starred wife, but also all those under his command. Emilia, Desdemona's loving caretaker, swore of her mistress' fidelity, but the tormented Othello would not listen. Iago's plan was promoted even more when he obtained a handkerchief Othello had given to Desdemona as a love token. It had been found by Emilia, who intended to return it to her mistress. Instead, Iago secretly planted it in Cassio's bed. Tortured over the weeks, and weary of Iago's incessant insinuations, Othello finally demanded proof from Iago of Desdemona's unfaithfulness: Villain, be sure thou prove my love a whore, Or by the worth of man's eternal soul, Thou hadst been better have been born a dog Than answer my wak'd wrath ... Frankenstein1 essays Mary Shelleys Frankenstein has been hailed as one of the best horror stories ever. The title, Frankenstein, is the last name of the creator of the infamous Frankensteins monster, Dr. Victor Frankenstein. His is a story of the great pain suffered by Frankenstein and his monster and peoples misunderstanding of the poor creature. All his efforts to find a companion are useless, as society shuns him for his horrid figure. Although the story is told by Dr. Frankenstein through Robert Walton, an arctic explorer, the antagonist seems to be his monster. Despite his gruesome appearance, this being composed of various cadaver parts starts out as a compassionate creature longing for companionship and curious of how he came to be. He desperately tries to befriend members of society, but utterly fails at each attempt. His appearance earns him no sympathy, but loathing from his creator and townspeople alike. For example, after secretly living with a poor family for more than a year, he decides to approach the father, a blind old man. The creature reasons that since the old man cannot see him, he will not be repulsed by the monsters form, thus providing companionship for the creature. As the two talk, the old man responds to the plight of the stranger. However, the monsters wish for friendship does not come true for the old mans children return home to find their blind father with a gigantic monster. The old m ans son attacks the monster, but instead of killing the boy, he runs away, overcome by despair and anguish. The creature decides to request Frankenstein make a female version of himself. Also Uncle Louie, a small time gangster, and Aunt Gert, who was forced as a child to hold her breath while she slept which caused her to forget to stop talking when she was breathing in. Grandma Kurnitz is made of steel, born out of a resolve to survive and live through the pain of survival. The main characters of the read were Jay, Arty, Uncle Louie, Eddie, Aunt Bella, Aunt Gert, and Grandma Kurnitz. Jay, is Eddies son and Arties older brother. He is in him early teens and wants to help out his father all he can, being the naive kid he is, he thinks he can leave Yonkers and go out and start his own life and make money to help out his father. Arty is Jays younger brother and has more of a sense of humor than Jay does. Hes got a fire to him that most kids his age dont have, his sarcasm through out the book was very funny at some times. Like Jay their Uncle Louie also intimidates him. Uncle Louie is a small time gangster with bigger projects on his mind. In his mind he is none other than Humphrey Bogart. He is in trouble with some bad company and decides to hide out for awhile at his mothers house. While there he teaches Jay and Artie what he thinks life is all about. They sneak out at night and steal ice cream from Grandmas store. Aunt Bella is a kind-hearted woman with finding true love always on her mind. She is a little slow upstairs, you might say that the wheel is still turning but the hamster is dead. Because of this she tends to be less afraid of spiting her mother. Creative Thinking relates to the problem approaching mechanism of the people, which is dependent on the working and the thinking style of the individuals. Knowledge refers to the relevant understanding that an individual brings in o rder to bear a creative effort. Teresa Amabile stresses on the fact that motivation is an accepted key to creative production, and most of the important motivators are passionate and are interested in the work. Knowledge has been described as the relevant information that an individual brings in order to bear a particular problem. According to Howard Gardner, there are two types of knowledge that are required for creativity, namely, long term focus and in depth experience. Creativity rests on the particular ability to combine previous disparate elements in new ways that implies the need for much broader focus along with varies interests. Key aspects of Creative Thinking, as suggested by Amabile, comprise of the following: Combining knowledge from the previously disparate fields Comfort in disagreeing with the others and trying to find out solutions that depart from status quo The specific ability to step away from a particular effort and return later with some fresh perspective The ability to persevere in dry spells and difficult problems Motivation, on the other hand, comprises of intrinsic interest, childlike curiosity and perseverance that border obsession, collectively set the individuals, who in turn, change the culture apart from rest of mankind. It has been noticed that much of the work of Amabile focuses on the role of intrinsic motivation and finding out the ways in which the intrinsic motivation can be improved both in the workplace as well as in the classroom. Non-synergistic motivation refers to the controlled motivations and synergistic motivations refer to the enabling and informational motivations; synergistic extrinsic motivators actually enhance and support intrinsic motivation, while non-synergistic motivators hinder the inherent or the intrinsic motivation. In relation to this, Amabile stresses that in educational contexts, the reward for schoolwork should always be viewed in the light of their impact on the creativity. Gals vs. Women This article is about gals. It's not an article about women. There are way too many books about women, and most of them are way too serious. Women itself is a serious word, not to mention womanhood and womanly. While being female is a serious activity, there is a lighter side which is rarely examined or written about. But women tend to attach too much significance to womanhood. This results in certain characteristically feminine, by which I mean over exaggerated self-important, behavioral patterns that can produce unfortunate results. These things include, but are not limited to, women being viewed as ruthless bitches who will step on anyone to get the best of a man. These things have given females a bad name. And the "Woman's Movement," which is supposed to give women more rights, seems to be densely populated with masculine looking para-military types. (These "females" require an entirely different category, but I will leave that discussion for a later time. For now I will write about those females which I believe fit into "normal parameters.") So I'm saying that there's another way to look at females: not as aggressive career hungry ego-maniacs; not as sensitive, Suzy Homemaker; but as gals. And what, exactly, do I mean by "gals"? I don't know. I haven't thought that much about it. Females whether women or gals do spend a lot of time pondering about our deepest feelings, but women think a lot about what it means to be a woman, and gals just are. But although I can't define exactly what it means to be a gal, I can describe certain gal characteristics, such as: Gals Do Not Have A Rigid And Well-Defined Code Of What It Takes To Be A Woman This is not the same as saying that gals do not consider themselves women, or do not think about being a woman, but gals do not get hung up thinking about it. Gals have never really grasped the Basic Code Of What It Takes To Be A Woman, such as matching their handbag, shoes, and belt, or only wearing white shoes between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Or is it Labor Day and Memorial Day? (A Woman, would know and have these dates marked and memorized.) Take my two dogs as examples, Blue, a neurotic dog who can only be categorized as a guy, and Katie, a gal dog.

Escape by W.S. Maugham

â€Å"ESCAPE† By William Somerset Maugham The text under interpretation is â€Å"Escape† by William Somerset Maugham. W. S. Maugham was a well-known English playwright, novelist and short story writer. He was the son of a British diplomat. He was educated at King`s school in Canterbury, studied painting in Paris, went to Heidelberg University in Germany and studied to be a doctor at St. Thomas Hospital in England. So, he put his hand in different activities and that`s why he is versatile and experienced person. S.Maugham was critical of the morals, the narrow-mindedness and hypocrisy of bourgeois society. Such novels as â€Å"Of Human Bondage†, â€Å"The Moon and the Sixpence†, â€Å"The Theatre† and others came under his pen. He was also the master of the short story. Among them are: â€Å"Colonel’s Lady†, â€Å"Friend in Need†, â€Å"Lion’s Skin†, etc. S. Maugham was among the most popular writers of his era, and reputedly, the highest paid author during the 1930s. Maugham’s style of writing is clear and precise. He doesn`t impose his views on the reader. He puts a question and leaves it to the reader to answer.I also like his revealing the weak sides and vices of human nature skilfully. His books are chatty and easy to read. This is clearly viewed from the given extract. â€Å"Escape† is a story about common people in common situation, and Maugham manages to tell it with the sense of humour and in a very interesting way. The essence of â€Å"The Escape†, to my mind, is that Roger and Ruth have diverse approaches towards the relations. Of course, the men and the women like the first step: flowers, attentiveness, passion. But then their paths diverge.The romance disappears, the man looks for the way out, he craves for new emotions, but the woman deems that the relations should develop into the marriage. And â€Å"The Escape† is the example of such a mismatch. The story can be logically divided into four main parts: the exposition, passages about Ruth’s and Roger’s love, Roger falls out of love and the break-up. The story has a straight line narrative structure with author’s digressions at the beginning. I think that the beginning of the story serves as its subject matter, where the author recounts his point of view on marriage.He convinces us that if a woman once made her mind to marry a man nothing but instant flight could save him. As an example he told a case, which happened with one of his friends, who seeing the inevitable marriage menacing before him, took ship and spent a year traveling round the world. He hoped the woman would forget him, but was mistaken. When he got back thinking himself safe, the woman, from whom he had fled, was waiting for him on the quay. This funny thing supports the idea that the inevitable loom of the marriage frightens some men and they try to avoid it.It should be mentioned, that he de scribes that awkward situation very skilfully and in a very ironical way. It could be confirmed by some cases of irony, used by the narrator – â€Å"instant flight† and â€Å"inevitable loom menacing before him†, â€Å"escaped with only a toothbrush for all his luggage†, which show us fear and trembling of men before the difficulties of the marriage. Maugham establishes realistic setting to his piece of writing. As the author uses the first-person narrative structure we can guess that the narrator is the secondary character of the story.The main ones here are Roger Charing and Ruth Barlow. To describe them, Maugham uses the direct characterization. For example, he gives it when speaks about of Ruth’s eyes using the epithets (â€Å"splendid†, â€Å"moving†, â€Å"big and lovely†), a detached epithet (â€Å"poor dear†) – all in the ironic way. Further on the narrator says that he knows only one man who escaped succe ssfully. Once upon a time his friend, Roger Charing told him he was going to marry. Roger was tall and handsome, rich, experienced middle-aged man. Of course, many women wanted to marry him.But he was happy to live the life of an unmarried man: the epithets â€Å"sufficient experience†, â€Å"careful† give the direct description of his lifestyle. But then he met Ruth Barlow. He fell in love with her. He immediately wanted to look after her and make her happy. Ruth was twice a widow, she was younger than Roger. She was quite good-looking and she had big, beautiful, dark eyes and she had the gift of pathos. When a man saw those big, sad eyes, he wanted to help Ruth. The epithet â€Å"defenceless† expose the power of her look.It was Ruth’s mode to get what she wanted because she had no other means (money for instance). This â€Å"gift† helped Ruth to reach her goals. The metaphor â€Å"the gift of pathos†, the epithets â€Å"splendid dark eyes †, â€Å"the most moving eyes†, â€Å"big and lovely eyes† and the repetition of the word â€Å"eyes† make us pay our attention to this peculiarity. And Ruth made her mind to marry Roger: he was rich, considerate, and tactful and was glad to take care of her, so he was the best variant for her. He didn’t let down and made a proposal of marriage to her and they were going to marry as soon as ossible. While reading we came across a lot of pure literary words (gift, splendid, wonderful, hazards, sadness, lovely) and some cliches (â€Å"the world was too much for her†, â€Å"stand between the hazards of life and this helpless little thing†, â€Å"how wonderful it would be to take the sadness out of those big and lovely eyes†) which are peculiar to the description of ordinary situations concerning love affairs, so we see what kind of story â€Å"The Escape† is. The narrator provokes us to perceive it ironically.Through Rogerâ €™s vision, Ruth was very unlucky. Indeed, she seemed to be very miserable, everything was wrong with her. If she married a husband he beat her; if she employed a broker he cheated her; if she engaged a cook she drank. She never had a little lamb but it was sure to die. We can observe hopelessness of Ruth’s life through the epithets â€Å"helpless little thing†, â€Å"rotten time†, â€Å"unfortunate†, â€Å"poor dear†, the metaphor â€Å"a little lamb†, parallel constructions â€Å"if she married†¦Ã¢â‚¬  and pure literary words such as â€Å"sufferings†, â€Å"hazards†, â€Å"sadness†.Roger took an interest in her destiny and was ready to relieve it: the repetition of the pronouns â€Å"she† and â€Å"her† in Roger’s speech, the epithet â€Å"dreadfully sorry† prove my assumption. The epithets â€Å"very happy† and â€Å"pleased† make us believe that it wasn’t a nuisance for him. But according to the narrator’s opinion, Ruth was two-faced woman of few ideas: he called her stupid and scheming. This epithets, the simile â€Å"as hard as nails† add some points to her description, so it again proves that the method of character-drawing here is direct.We see two people, Roger and Ruth, as the future family, so this is the idea of this extract of the text. The author describes the first part of their relations which were rather standard. As thousands of men and women, they met, fell in love and decided to be together. But then, on a sudden, Roger fell out of love. This was the second part of their relations. There was no evident reason. Perhaps, his heart-strings were no longer touched by Ruth’s pathetic look. Roger became acutely conscious that Ruth had a mind to marry him. He gave a solemn oath that nothing would induce him to marry Ruth.But he was in a quandary. He was aware that Ruth would assess her feelings at an immod erately high figure if he asked her to release him. Besides, he didn’t want people to say that he jilted a woman. The epithets â€Å"acutely conscious†, â€Å"a solemn oath† and â€Å"an immoderately high figure† stress the importance, significance of his decision; as to the epithet â€Å"pathetic look† and the metaphor â€Å"heart-strings† (at the same time it is a cliche), they produce the humorous effect. Falling out of love is the most terrible thing I can imagine.Recently it was an acute pleasure for Roger to do everything for Ruth. He was charmed, but, as I suppose, it wasn’t a serious and profound feeling – Roger lost it too easily. It is obvious Ruth was a narrow-minded woman and she didn’t really love Roger. But there are some arguments to be said in her defence, she lonely and wanted to be protected. Probably she would be a good wife. The repetition of the expression â€Å"to have a mind to† reveals the conflict of Roger’s and Ruth’s interests. Ruth desired to have relations of long duration – she cried for the moon.On the contrary, Roger wanted to escape with no loss. And again we are the witnesses of the usual continuation of the love story. It’s rather banal. Roger kept his own counsel; he remained attentive to all her wishes. It was decided that they would be married as soon as they found a suitable house. Roger applied to the agents and visited with Ruth house after house. It was very hard to find a satisfactory one. Sometimes houses were too large, sometimes they were too small, sometimes they were too expensive and sometimes they were too stuffy, sometimes they were too airy.The idea is that only such dishonest, shabby act as the flat-chase tactics seemed to be appropriate for Roger. I think, it was like a committing a crime. Roger’s behaviour wasn’t fair, it was even disgraceful, but unfortunately such conduct is not uncommon, the m en trick the women very often, because their attitude towards the relations differs. Parallel constructions â€Å"sometimes they were too large, sometimes they were too small, sometimes they were too expensive and sometimes they were too stuffy†, the metaphor â€Å"house-hunting†, the epithet â€Å"innumerable kitchens† describe Roger’s scheme of the trouble-free parting.Firstly I took Roger’s side, because I consider that each person should have a right for free choice, but then I was sorry for Ruth, Roger tired her out, she didn’t understand what was happening. The epithet â€Å"exhausted† demonstrates her state brightly. At last Ruth revolted. She asked Roger if he wanted to marry her. There was an unaccustomed hardness in her voice, but it didn’t affect the gentleness of his reply. Roger persuaded her that they would be married the very moment they found a suitable house. Ruth took to her bed. She didn’t want to see Roger, but he was as ever assiduous and gallant.Every day he sent her flowers, wrote that he had some more houses to look at. The epithets â€Å"assiduous†, â€Å"gallant† display his dissimulation. A week passed and he received the letter: Ruth let him know that she was going to get married and claimed that Roger didn’t love her. He answered that her news shattered him, but her happiness had to be his first consideration. He sent Ruth seven orders to view. He was quite sure she would find among them a house that would exactly suit her. So, we can see that Roger appeared to be very smart and sly person.He appeared quite cute to predict Ruth’s following actions. When he got the hang of Ruth, he pretended he was still in love very gallantly, until she got the hang of him, and I should say it was a more civilized way of jilting a woman than just to leave her. So, I think the message of the story is that a woman can be sly and scheming, but a man can make it his way also. This story carried me with its eternal intrigue – the war between male and female. We may be in earnest about it or may try to ignore it, but it really takes place and this problem will exist until the end of human history.

The price of the IPhone 5 64GB alone is $400. With a contract the IPhone 5 64GB comes out to about $200. The appearance of the cell phone has changed completely. In 1983 the phone was super big, as NBC describes it, â€Å"the brick†.It would only allow thirty minute calls and took up to eight hours for it to charge. It was gray and had a large keypad. The only thing you could operate was have a call for thirty minutes. You could only save a few numbers. Of course if you can only have phone calls, which means you could not take pictures. The IPhone 5 is very thin and is light in weight. You have a choice betwe en white or black phone. It only takes up to about forty-five minutes for it to fully charge.It is touch screen, you can take pictures, listen to music, save up to hundreds of phone numbers, and you can send text messages. You can also get onto the internet. Since the first cell phone only allowed one thirty minute conversation, you usually had to talk to people in person more and would have to write letter instead of just sending text message. They would usually have to set up meetings. Which today you can have a ten hour phone call if you wanted too and you can send text messages if you need to tell them something at the exact moment, or they have FaceTime meetings, o it really changed how people communicate in today’s society. When the first cell phone came out of course it did not have any apps for it if all you could was call and receive calls. Which today there are over thousands of apps to get. Many people buy or download new apps on a daily basis. There are different types of apps which are social media, games, news, books, business, education, fitness, medical, lifestyle, music sports travel, utilities, and weather.The app that mostly all teens and adults have is Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. It’s usually teens that have games and entertainment apps on their phones. Adults usually have books, weather, education, and all the other adult categories of apps. There are always new updates for all of these apps. For instance Twitter just had an update and the last update was a couple months ago, meaning usually apps have a new update with new features every couple of months, or even sooner or later than that.It usually depends on the app producer. There will always be new appearances’ of cell phones and different prices. Today the discussion will be about the discrimination and prejudice which Black Africans and Colored face in South Africa as well as the different races and ethnicities within South Africa. Cultures, Races, and Ethnic Groups First we need to take a good look at the meaning of culture, race, and ethnicity to better understand how each goes together. Culture deals with the values, beliefs, behaviors, and material objects, which help, form a way of life for people. Race is when people are, categorized by the biological traits in which those in the society share, such as whites, African American, Asian, and others. Some might be classified as a ce rtain race due to traits such as the hair, skin color, facial features, or even body shape. Ethnicity is dealing with shared cultural heritage based on ancestors, language, and religions, which those people share. As we see these three things can go together, but they are also not alike in some ways as well. (Macionis, 2006) South Africa is comprised of many different languages, cultures, religions, and races. The nation consists of about â€Å"75 percent black, 14 percent white, 9 percent Colored, which is mixed racial heritage, and two percent Asian† as far as races go. (Knight and Mabunda, 2000) Then the races are divided out even more to form â€Å"ethnic groups with blacks being 5.6 million Xhosa, 5.3 million Zulu, and 4.2 million English† and â€Å"the 3.6 million Colored coming from many origins with a mixture of white, black and Asian ancestries† while the â€Å"6 million whites are about 3.6 million Afrikaner and 2.4 English heritages. Racism is the belief that one racial category is innately superior or inferior to another. There are many cases where one race has killed another race just because they were different. A race is a socially constructed category composed of people who share biologically transmitted traits that members of a society consider important. People may classify one another racially based on physical characteristics such as skin color, facial features, hair texture, and body shape. (Macionis, 2006). Race and ethnicity sometimes can be easily confused. The only way to clearly define the difference in the two is this: race refers to a person’s biological phenotype. Examples of races are Asian, African American, Indian, Caucasian, and so on. Ethnicity refers to a person’s cultural characteristics. Ethnicity is commonly defined by language, customs, or culture, common ancestors, and religion. Due to the countrys great ethnic diversity, South Africa has no single national culture. Ethnic and cultural assimilation have begun slowly to change this situation, but cultural differences still tend to correspond closely with racial ones, and each ethnic group may be identified with a more or less distinctive culture. At least 77% of South Africans are black Africans. Despite the effects of urbanization and westernization, (most black South Africans speak English or Afrikaans as well as an African mother tongue), the majority remain very poor and live rural and necessarily simple lives. Culture among black South Africans is consistent but by no means homogenous; marked distinctions can still be made along ethno-linguistic lines. South Africas policy of black economic empowerment (BEE) is not simply a moral initiative to redress the wrongs of the past. It is a pragmatic growth strategy that aims to realize the countrys full economic potential. In the decades before South Africa achieved democracy in 1994, the apartheid government systematically excluded African, Indian and colored people from meaningful participation in the countrys economy. This inevitably caused much poverty and suffering and a profoundly sick economy. The distortions in the economy eventually led to a crisis, started in the 1970s, when gross domestic product (GDP) growth fell to zero, and then hovered at about 3.4% in the 1980s. At a time when other developing economies with similar resources were growing, South Africa was stagnating. South African Colored culture is not easy to define as it refers to all people not categorized as white, black or Asian under racial classifications during apartheid. The first Colored people of South Africa were the slaves brought to the Cape after 1652 by the Dutch from the Dutch East Indies. The descendants of these people are sometimes referred to as Cape Malays. The South African Colored belief system of the descendants of slaves and exiled political prisoners brought here from the East by the Dutch is rooted in Islam. Among the political prisoners captured during their fight for freedom were holy men of noble birth who read secretly from the Koran to their people. (South African Tourism Research Site) The literature on transitional justice relates mechanisms such as truth commissions to the politics of negotiations. Such mechanisms are considered necessary to effect a smooth transition in circumstances where the institutions of the old order remain to a greater or lesser degree in place, yet are perceived as being unable or unwilling to facilitate the transition to a more democratic culture. In South Africa, as in many other emerging democracies, a crisis of legitimacy afflicted institutions such as the judiciary and security forces; they were thus seen as being constrained in their capacity to usher in a new order founded on democratic values especially for issues of accountability and prosecutions. Yet the need for these special transitional mechanisms implies a weakness or vulnerability in the new democracys ability to effectively affect the institutions of the old government and ensure political stability and peace. Thus in South Africa, for example, the amnesty provisio ns that formed one of the key planks of the TRC resulted from an effective refusal by the former apartheid governments security forces to guarantee peaceful elections without a reciprocal agreement by the premier liberation movement, the African National Congress (ANC), to provide some form of amnesty. Truth commissions are far from being merely a technical bridge between old and new; rather, they reflect the lines of ongoing contestation among and within opposing camps. The parliamentary debate that shaped the South African truth commission, for example, was extremely lengthy and heated, with the forces of the old order trying to limit the power and scope of the commission. When Family Isnt Supportive I received a heart-breaking Facebook message from a 15-year-old young man who asked me how to get his writing accepted. When I explained about polishing his words, agents, publishers, indie and the like, he replied: For me, I come from an unsupportive family that doesnt take writing as a talent or a valuable art. How can I practice in such conditions? My husband supports me unconditionally, often following me to my appearances. One son out of town reads my work and  gives honest feedback. My sister-in-law in Iowa reads every book within days of release. Other than that, nobody else in my family has read my novels much, and definitely havent read any articles, blogs or other items Ive published. While I thank my lucky stars for the three people I have, I know how that stings when family doesnt care. I once used my teenagers interest in playing hockey. Ask them how much time and money they invest in their sports, hunting, cars, video games, etc. 5) Carve out time and call it yours. It doesnt have to be called writing time, but you use it as such. Just make sure you capitalize on it and write instead of doing other non-productive things. 6) Refuse to feel guilty about a beloved hob 7) Display how much writing makes you whole . . . and happier. If you act grumpy, you accentuate their opinion. 8) Ask them when theyll give up reading, watching television, going to movies, listening to music, playing online games, because a writer allowed all of those entertainment opportunities to happen. 9) When someone asks when youll do something other than that writing stuff, tell them you adore what you do. Estimated Proposed Budget. In order to effectively budget for the year 1991, considering the manifold line is outsourced to a third party for manufacture, substantial assumptions had to be made. The costs increase form year to year due to inflation and the changes in the CPI index. Plastic Pink Flamingo Essay

In â€Å"The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History.† author Jennifer Price explains that the lifeless bird symbolizes Americans are lead on by the media and will purchase just about anything to prove their wealthiness. In Price’s view the United States is consumed with flashy displays of wealth. Americans will partake in anything that is bold or bright. In the first half of the essay, the author discusses the fact that the new popular item on the market is a plastic flamingo, which represents â€Å"wealth and pizzazz.† Price’s blunt sentence â€Å"But no matter†, after explaining that flamingos had been hunted to extinction in Florida shows, in reality, she is ashamed and angered by this fact, which represents how our old, poor society has died. Even worse she explains how businesses succeeded off of selling flamingo products or naming businesses after flamingos. Flamingos â€Å"stand out† in one’s lawn which shows â€Å"extravagance and â€Å"boldness† in analogizing for the generation raised in the Depression. People spent money on a useless plastic bird – a foolish action none would have thought to do before this. Jennifer Price use of suc h emphatic words let readers imagine strong or rather bold nature or American culture. The 1950s was definitely a time of change for many Americans. These people had overcome a great hardship and were ready for a new start. Jennifer Price relates in her essay that American culture was very strong and powerful at the time. Price makes Americans of the 1950s seem frivolous Price continues this effect by further explaining Americans’ obsession with the color pink, describing their sense of style has grown bolder and noticeable. Americans â€Å"brighten† things to make them attractive and to make profits. Price gives examples of household items that come in all shades of pink, including Elvis Presley’s pink Cadillac. The author begins the last paragraph with yet another sarcastic remark, by asking â€Å"Why, after all, call the birds pink flamingos as if they could be blue or green?† because this statement was toward the end of the essay some may think that Price is making a final statement. She supports her idea by further explaining that the color of the plastic flamingo was not even  accurate to that of the real flamingos. Price, it can be assumed, dislikes society carefree attitude shown through how Americans have not respected the flamingo, as Egyptians, early Christians, Mexicans, and Caribbean people did. Perhaps we do not think of the pink flamingo today when the word â€Å"wealth† pops in mind, but the need to show is still with us. It may be the cell phones flashed by every teenager or even the designer clothes worn by one. Jennifer Price has criticized American’s culture and belief. Regardless, Price explains how she views today’s society through the examp le of the pink plastic flamingo.

Administrative Theories in Public Administration Essay

I have never thought that administrative theories in Public Administration has been established back in 1800 with theorist who have discovered or developed and now has been part of the system of the Philippine government. The earliest contributors to our understanding of management theory included practicing managers as well as social scientist. More recent theorist has tended to be academic or management consultants. The early theorist can be divided into 2 main groups – the practicing managers such, as Taylors and Fayol and the social scientists, such as Mayo and Mc Gregor. Meet the Mr. Taylor, the theorist of Scientific Management. Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1915), one of the early practical manager-theorist, born in Boston, Massachusetts, spent the greater part of his life working on the problems of achieving greater efficiency on the shop-floor where he manages. The solution he came up with was based directly on his own experience at work, initially as a shop floor worker and later as a manager. He pioneers scientific management which includes: The systematic study of the relationships between and tasks to redesign the work for higher efficiency. Taylor sought to reduce the time a worker spent on each task by optimizing the way the task was done. Scientific Management Theory Organizations were seeking ways to better satisfy customer needs Machinery was changing the way goods were produced Managers had to increase the efficiency of the worker-task mix According to him, there are 4 Principles to increase efficiency that are: a. Study the way the job is performed now and determine new ways to do it. Gather detailed, time and motion information; try different methods to see which is best b. Codify the method into rules – Teach to all workers c. Select workers whose skills match the rules set in step2 d. Establish a fair level of performance and pay for higher performance – Workers should benefit from higher output But, Taylor recognizes that the measures he was proposing would appear to be more than just a new method – they would be revolutionary. He stated that the outset that â€Å"scientific management† would require a complete mental revolution on the part of management and workers. Henry Fayol (1841-1924) – father of modern management theory He divided industrial into 6 groups: technical, commercial, financial, security, accounting & managerial And formulated the 14 Principles of management which we are using it every day in our daily activities, allow me to enumerate them and somehow expand a little. Division of Labor – allows for job specialization, Authority and responsibility – Fayol noted firms can have too much specialization leading to poor quality and worker involvement. Unity of command – employees should have one boss. Line of authority – a clear chain from top to bottom of the firm. Centralization – the degree to which authority rests at the very top. Unity of direction – one plan of action to guide the organization. Equity – treat all employees fairly in justice and respect. Order – each employee is put where they have the most value. Initiative – encourages innovation. Discipline – obedient, applied, respectful employees needed. Remuneration of Personnel – The payment system contributes to the success. Stability of nature – long term employment is important. General interest over personal interest – the organization takes precedence over the individual. Esprit de corps – share enthusiasm or devotion to the organization. I have added here some of the theorist I researched which I consider to be worth sharing. Mary Parker – an influential leader in early managerial theory. a. Suggested workers help in analyzing their jobs for improvements b. The worker knows the best way to improve the job c. If workers have the knowledge of the task, then they should control the task. The Hawthorne Studies It appears that the workers enjoyed the attention they received as part of the study and were more productive. Contingency Theory – Assumes there is no one best way to manage The environment impact the organization and managers must be flexible to react to environmental changes The way the organization is designed, control systems selected, depend on the environment Conclusion As management theories evolved in centuries, the principles and ideas were never changed yet it has been a guiding value to those who are in public nor private service and to those who are employed and business people. It’s amazing how they have passed on to many generations of people who wanted to learn and use the theories. The theories have been explicit in explanations and user-friendly, though there are theorists who have presented different thoughts on the earlier theorist but if we examine deeply, it’s all the same, only presented in different design. Before I end, I would just like to emphasize the last part of the theories because it speaks about our relationship with the environment and how we will relate environmental, Technological environments change rapidly so must managers.
